Applied and Technical Biology

The applied aspect of our research relates mainly to biological processes in technical systems. These can be beneficial, e.g., when living organisms are utilized for industrial production or waste treatment, or detrimental in the case of contamination, microbially-induced corrosion, and production failures. In all these areas, we work tightly with industry, consulting companies, and authorities. Often projects start from their side with an actual biotechnical problem or the wish to capitalize on our biological knowledge or methods. Examples of ongoing collaborations are projects in wastewater treatment, biological air filters, “green energy” production, aquaculture, drinking water safety, or offshore oil production systems.
