Ecology is the scientific discipline of understanding interactions between living organisms and their environment. Ecology is also the study of ecosystems with their network of complex interactions and mutual relationships between plants, animals, microorganisms and their surrounding environment. This includes topics relating to biodiversity, the degradation and circulation of biological matter and nutrients, and the interaction between ecosystems, atmosphere and climate. Research at the Department of Biology in ecology is very diverse and includes the effect of biotic factors on the geographical distribution of animals and plants, the effect on ecosystems of climatic change, the use of natural prey-predator relationships in biological pest control, and the analyses on of how biological networks can be applied in deciphering complex biological relationships. The application of ecological knowledge spans conservation and protection of animals and plants in their natural environment, the restoration of natural habitats, and management of natural resources in agriculture and fisheries.
